Rouge Tomate - Red Hot and Green Venue in NYC

I really would love a mini vacation to NYC! If I were there, I would check out the new eco-luxe restaurant Rouge Tomate. The food and decor are all sustainable and the venue boasts an impressive mult-level design... The Cranberry Pool is my favorite (pictured below) and this would be where I would have wanted my bachelorette party or bridal shower! VerTerra } Modern, Natural, Compostable Tableware Made from Palm Leaves

Check out VerTerra, a modern and sustainable single-use tableware collection...Inspired by plates used at roadside stands in India, these unique plates, platters and bowls are made using only fallen palm leaves and water. Each piece is 100% compostable, can be used in the microwave or freezer and are perfect for sending leftovers and treats home with guests. Plates that don't find a home can be rinsed and tossed in the yard. After about 60 days the plates will completely compost! I'm loving the hexagonal plates and have a great post-meal idea that involves paint (or decoupage) and mounting the plates as wall decor like this.

Wasara } Paper ware for spiritual enrichment

Oh my goodness, my heart skipped a beat when I discovered Wasara, a truly magnificent concept in disposable paper table ware. With aesthetic beauty and thoughtful ergonomics, this Japanese concept has created an impressive way to display your culinary creations and serve your guests. But wait, the Wasara collection is also sustainable! Even though these items are disposable, their content is eco-friendly in design because they are made from reed pulp, which is quite renewable, and bagasse, which is pulp waste produced when juice is extracted from the sugarcane...the result is a tree-free, compostable and absolutely stunning collection of entertaining pieces. Lowepro Terraclime } Eco-Friendly Camera Bags

While researching new digital cameras, I came across these really cool and eco-friendly camera bags by LowePro. This series of camera bags is called Terraclime and each bag is made from 95% recycled materials like pop bottles. Even the buckles and loops are made from plastic regrind scraps from the factory floor. I especially like the tapered shape of the body and flap, and the way the closure is "s" shaped rather than a two piece buckle...looks like you could fasten & unfasten it with one hand...plus less bulk and excess hardware. P.S. A portion of each purchase goes directly to Polar Bears International (PBI) to help in their efforts to save polar bear habitats from the impact of climate change. Via Inhabit.

"Designer Elsbeth Joy Nielsen from the Netherlands has discovered a way of producing silk without killing silkworms. Normally the worms die when their cocoons are boiled to loosen the silk; Nielsen's technique allows them to create a patch of pure silk while crawling back and forth over a platter looking for a place to build their cocoons. Once the panel is complete, they are left to pupate naturally. The resulting scarf demonstrates the material's exquisite beauty."

The Sorapot } So Hot!

Ok, here's another one for the "I wish I had this on my wedding registry"... Let me pour you some inspiration with the Sorapot, a beautiful, functional and stunning teapot design with sustainable packaging features. The container is a glass tube that showcases the unfurling of your tea leaves and the whole teapot design is so clever. To add the tea leaves, you split the handle and tip the glass tube into a vertical position. Close it back up and add water through the pour spout. Ingenius! Gorgeous! I want one to show case my favorite organic flowering tea!

Via Sustainable is Good, I learned that one of my favorite organic body care lines, Pangea Organics, will be launching a new kids line featuring Dr. Seuss's eco-friendly character the Lorax! This new line will be available exclusively at Target around May 2009 and will include items such as children’s toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and more! How exciting!

A Green 4th of July!

For this year's 4th of July party I was inspired by the cool green, white and brown colors of Carlene & Sonny's wedding theme and the Its Heavenly Blog. I wanted to keep my party as green & reusable as possible and really didn't want to buy anything novelty that I knew would never see another day. I used green colored reed placements to dress up my wooden screen and covered my cushions with green fabric remnants. For table decor I used exising glass vases, wrapped them with bamboo placemats and filled them with colored curly willow that I already owned.

Other green decor included bamboo shoots from our bedroom and my masterpiece of the day...a bamboo water fountain! I took my bamboo floor lamp and secured a wood tray on top with raffia wire. Then I made an arrangement with bamboo shoots, river rocks, succulents from the backyard and an old fountain pump. Voila!  A relaxing and free flowing soundscape to melt away the heat. We love it! It's still in the patio and greets us whenever we enter our home!

Ovopur } Environmentally friendly water dispenser that looks like an egg

Today, I discovered Ovopur, an environmentally friendly and uber-cool looking water dispenser.
Via MocoLoco, I learned that the Ovopur:

1) Consumes no electricity. Instead it uses gravity to filter and revitalize tapwater, 2) The unit itself is made of porcelain, glass, and metal, and 3) Features a reusable, multilayer filter cartridge whose contents are 100% recyclable. The main reservoir can hold up to 11 liters of fresh water, with the water level indicated by the magnetic gauge. The filter cartridge uses a combination of KDF 55, activated carbon, microporous bioceramics and quartz crystal to remove impurities from the water.

Valentine's Day } Organic Rose Basket

This is a lovely eco-chic rose gift basket that I made from my Organic Bouquet order on Valentine's Day. The wrapping cloth is a beautiful and vintage Furoshiki that was a thrift store find and the woven basket was purchased at Daiso. Both packaging items are elegant, eco-friendly and completely reusable. For the floral arrangement I lined the basket with plastic and a shallow square piece of floral foam (I can't wait until a more eco-friendly version of this nasty spongy green stuff hits the market), and inserted the organic rose blooms. Finally, I added silver crimped wire for embellishment. If given more time I would have added one colorful ribbon around the basket but in the end, I like how this gift turned out.

Happy Valentine's Day in Organic Style!

Let me just say...I LOVE ORGANIC STYLE and ORGANIC BOUQUET! Last May, I wrote about Organic Bouquet acquiring the Organic Style brand name. This Valentine's Day I have the pleasure of writing this glowing praise for Organic Style's product and service. I ordered flowers and gifts for me and my hubby, and I am so thrilled with what we received!   

Organic Style flowers have some amazing must-see packaging! I also ordered add-ons like a plush organic bear and some organic chocolate truffles. To my surprise the bear was a miYim plush toy (available at Whole Foods in the lifestyle section)! It's so soft and cuddly! The truffles came in a heart shaped box that I can't wait to get into with some Jasmine Green tea.

The roses came with a vase and were kept wet with a sponge filled with water. The bouquet was carefully wrapped and the rose blooms were separated by corrugated cardboard. When I removed the plastic and cardboard the roses were clean, undamaged and robust. I only had to remove a couple of the outer petals and some torn leaves.
